Titanium Dioxide (Rutile)

Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂, Rutile Form)

What is Titanium Dioxide (Rutile)?

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is a white chemical compound. Its most stable crystalline form in nature is rutile. It is notable for its high opacity (obscuring transparency), whiteness, and brightness. Its other crystalline form, anatase, is less stable.

    • It adds brightness and whiteness to paints thanks to its high opacity feature.
  • Sunscreen and Cosmetic Products
    • It protects the skin by blocking UVB and UVA rays.
    • It is used in sunscreens, makeup products, and skin care products.
  • Food Industry
    • It acts as a whitening and opacifying agent as a food additive.
    • It provides a white appearance, especially in products such as ice cream.
  • Plastics Industry
    • Used for whitening and brightening plastics.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry
    • It acts as a whitening and protective coating material in tablet coatings.

⚠️ Note: The inhalation of nano-sized titanium dioxide particles may cause health concerns, and its use is restricted by international regulations.

How is Titanium Dioxide (Rutile) Produced?

Titanium dioxide production is typically carried out from ilmenite (FeTiO₃) or rutile (TiO₂) ores. The production process from rutile ore involves the following steps:

  • Extraction of Rutile Ore

It is extracted from mines or beach sand. The ores must contain rutile, a titanium mineral.

  • Grinding

The extracted ore is ground into a fine powder. This ensures that the rutile is in a form suitable for further processing.

  • Enrichment by Flotation

Ground rutile ore is enriched through a process called flotation. During this process, special chemicals are added to the surface of the rutile, and with the help of air bubbles, the rutile particles float while other minerals sink. In this way, the rutile is concentrated.

  • Filtering and Drying

The rutile concentrate obtained after the flotation process is filtered and dried. This step involves removing water and excess moisture.

  • Calcination

Titanium dioxide is obtained by roasting rutile concentrate in a high-temperature furnace (usually between 900-1000°C). During this process, rutile is converted into titanium dioxide through the relevant chemical reactions.

  • Grinding and Classification

The final product is ground and classified according to the desired particle sizes.

As a result, titanium dioxide (rutile) is obtained through a series of chemical and physical processes, such as the extraction, processing, and roasting of rutile ore. These processes ensure that titanium dioxide is converted into a high-purity powder and made suitable for industrial applications.
