Glycerin (C3H8O3)

Glycerine

Gliserin Nedir?

Glycerin, chemically known as propane-1,2,3-triol, is a colorless, odorless, and sweet liquid found in plant and animal fats in nature. It can also be produced synthetically.

  • It is used in skin care products due to its moisturizing properties.
  • It is preferred in the food industry due to its sweetening and moisture-retaining properties.
  • It is used as a solvent and carrier substance in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • It contributes to polymer production in the plastics and chemical industries.

Glycerin is also a critical compound as an explosive raw material in the production of nitroglycerin.

In Which Industries Is Glycerin Used?

Cosmetics Industry

  • Moisturizing cream, lotion, soap, and shampoo with moisture-retaining properties.

Food Industry

  • Used as a sweetener, humectant, and thickener.
  • It is used as an additive in some beverages and types of alcohol.

Pharmaceutical Industry

  • Solvent and stabilizer in syrups.
  • Ingredient in mouthwashes and medical solutions.

Plastics and Chemical Industry

  • Flexibility-enhancing additive in polymer production.
  • Additive for detergent, paper, and textile processing.

Explosive Production

  • Raw material in nitroglycerin production.

How is Glycerin Produced?

Two main methods are used in glycerin production:

  1. Hydrolysis of Fats
    • Vegetable or animal fats are processed with NaOH in hot water.
    • The reaction results in the formation of soap and glycerin.
  2. Saponification
    • Glycerin is produced as a byproduct during soap manufacturing.
    • It is then separated and purified.

The glycerin obtained is refined for use in cosmetics, food, pharmaceuticals, and industrial applications.
