What is Acrylic Acid?
Acrylic Acid (C₃H₄O₂); Also known as Propenoic Acid, it is a colorless, pungent-smelling, and flammable liquid organic acid. With the chemical formula CH₂=CHCOOH, acrylic acid is used as a fundamental monomer in many industries due to its high reactivity.
It dissolves easily in water and is miscible with various organic solvents. It is a critical raw material, especially in the production of acrylate polymers.

In Which Industries Is Acrylic Acid Used?
Acrylic acid is an important chemical used in many industries. Some examples include:
- Polymer industry: Acrylic acid is one of the basic monomers used in the production of polymers. Acrylic and methacrylic acid polymers, in particular, are used in the manufacture of various products such as paints, varnishes, coatings, adhesives, and rubber.
- Surfactants: Various surfactants are produced by combining materials such as acrylic acid, sodium acrylate, sodium hydroxide, and sulfuric acid. These substances are used in many applications, such as detergents, cleaners, cosmetics, and textile processing products.

How is Acrylic Acid Produced?
Acrylic acid is a monomer produced by the oxidation of propylene gas. It is produced through the following steps:
Catalytic oxidation of propylene gas: Propylene gas is oxidized in a reactor with air using a catalyst. As a result of this reaction, acetyl coenzyme A (the main product) is formed, similar to acetylene.
Hydrolysis of acetyl CoA: The resulting acetyl CoA is hydrolyzed and broken down into acrylic acid and CoA.
Separation: The resulting acrylic acid is purified through a separation process. This process separates the acrylic acid from other products.
Polymerization: Acrylic acid is converted into polymers such as polyacrylate through the polymerization process.
Although the production process of acrylic acid is quite complex, this monomer is a highly sought-after chemical and is used in many industries.
