Chlorinated Paraffin

Chlorinated Paraffin Wax

What is Chlorinated Paraffin?

Chlorinated paraffin is a group of non-flammable chemical compounds obtained from the combination of chlorine and paraffin. It is used as a secondary plasticizer in PVC processing and exhibits plasticizing properties.

  • Provides flexibility and durability in plastic and rubber products.
  • It adds safety with its flame retardant properties.
  • It plays a role in protecting metal surfaces thanks to its corrosion-resistant structure.
  • It offers a cost advantage over primary plasticizers due to its affordability.

Chlorinated paraffins are generally divided into two groups based on carbon chain length: C10–13 (short chain) and C14–17 (medium chain).

In Which Industries Is Chlorinated Paraffin Used?

Chlorinated paraffin is used in many industries due to its versatile properties:

  • Plastics Industry
    • It is used as a secondary plasticizer in PVC processes.
    • It increases the hardness, durability, and flexibility properties of plastics.
  • Automotive Industry
    • Used as a lubricant and sealant.
    • Prevents wear and tear on vehicle parts and extends their lifespan.
  • Paint and Coating Industry
    • Provides protective and anti-corrosion additives.
    • It increases the durability and water resistance of paint films.
  • Textile Industry
    • It is used as a fire retardant additive.
  • Rubber Industry
    • It acts as a stabilizer in rubber products.
    • Provides flexibility and durability.

How is Chlorinated Paraffin Produced?

Chlorinated paraffin production is achieved by chlorinating paraffin oil:

  1. Chlorination of Paraffin Oil
    • Paraffin oil is mixed with chlorine gas in a reactor.
    • Chlorinated paraffin is formed as a result of the reaction.
  2. Removal of Impurities
    • The product undergoes acid washing, precipitation, neutralization, and filtration processes.
  3. Privatization
    • The final product undergoes additional processing according to its area of use and is made ready for industrial use.

⚠️ The production process is strictly controlled due to environmental and health risks.
