What is Cyclohexanone?
Cyclohexanone is an organic ketone with the chemical formula C6H10O and a cyclic structure. It is also known as Ketohexamethylene and Pimelic Ketone.
Colorless, clear, and characteristically odorous liquid, Cyclohexanone; it is miscible with solvents such as alcohol, acetone, and ether, but is immiscible with water. Due to these properties, it is a powerful solvent preferred in many industrial productions.
It is an important component in the production of nylon, plastic, resin, varnish, adhesives, paints, and coatings. It is also widely used in perfumes and cosmetic products.

How is Cyclohexanone Produced?
Cyclohexanone is usually produced by the oxidation of cyclohexane. The process consists of the following stages:
- Oxidation:
- Cyclohexane is oxidized with the help of hydrogen peroxide and metal catalysts (mostly cobalt or manganese).
- At this stage, cyclohexane hydroperoxides (CHP) are formed.
- Hydrolysis:
- CHP is hydrolyzed with hot water or steam.
- This process yields cyclohexanone.
- Purification:
- The cyclohexanone obtained is separated with water and purified to high purity by distillation.
This method is the most commonly used process for the industrial-scale production of cyclohexanone and provides a critical intermediate for nylon production.
