How is Naphthalene Sulfonate Produced?

The production of naphthalene sulfonate consists of several stages:

  1. Sulfonation Process
    • Naphthalene is reacted with sodium bisulfate or sodium sulfate.
    • This reaction adds a sulfonic acid group to the naphthalene molecule.
  2. Neutralization
    • The resulting sulfonic acid derivatives are neutralized with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃).
  3. Final Product
    • The water-soluble naphthalene sulfonate obtained is used in various industries as a surfactant, dispersant, and concrete additive.
