In Which Industries Is Phthalic Anhydride Used?

Polymer Industry

  • Polyester resins, alkyd resins, epoxy resins, and thermoplastic elastomers are used as intermediate materials in their production.

Paint and Coating Industry

  • It increases durability, gloss, and adhesion in paints, varnishes, emulsions, and coatings.

Pharmaceutical Industry

  • It plays a role in the synthesis of antibiotics, vitamins, and various pharmaceutical products.

Agricultural Industry

  • It is used in the formulation of insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides.

Chemical Industry

  • It acts as an intermediate product in various chemical reactions and syntheses.

How is Phthalic Anhydride Produced?

Phthalic anhydride is obtained by oxidation from ortho-xylene or naphthalene raw materials.

  1. Ortho-Xylene Oxidation (Most Common Method)
  • Ortho-xylene is reacted with oxygen gas or nitrogen oxides at high temperatures.
  • Phthalic acid is formed in the presence of a catalyst (usually sulfuric acid).
  • Phthalic acid is then converted to its anhydride form.
  1. Naphthalene Oxidation
  • Naphthalene is processed with basic substances (such as NaOH, NaHS).
  • It is then oxidized with oxygen gas to produce phthalic acid.
  • The phthalic acid obtained is converted into its anhydride form to produce phthalic anhydride.

Today, the ortho-xylene oxidation method is widely used because it is more efficient and economical.
